Panama accumulates 7,813 deaths and 721,479 cases of covid-19

Panama City, Feb 4 (EFE) .- The Ministry of Health of Panama (Minsa) reported this Friday 4,308 new cases of covid-19 and 25 deaths from the disease, to reach a cumulative of 721,479 confirmed infections and 7,813 deaths during the pandemic. Of the total number of new deaths reported by the Ministry in its daily report on the pandemic, 23 are from the last 24 hours and 2 from unspecified previous dates. There are 82 patients hospitalized for the coronavirus in intensive care units (ICU) and 643 in the general ward, while 49,884 are isolated at home and 191 in hotels, for a total of 50,075 active cases. The patients who have been healed add up to 662,866 since March 9, 2020, when the first case of contagion occurred in Panama, where covid has a fatality rate of 1.1%, one of the lowest in the Latin American region. On this day, 17,873 tests were applied to detect cases of covid, which showed a positivity of 24.2%. Panama has 5,277,396 tests applied to date. Regarding the vaccination process, the report of the Expanded Program on Immunization (PAI) indicates that since January 2021, 7,210,528 doses of vaccine against covid-19 have been applied. Of that amount, 3,246,200 are the first dose; 2,883,404 second dose; and 1,070,893 booster doses. The total coverage of the target population, from 5 years of age, is 81.8% with the first dose; 72.6% in second dose; 34.2% with booster dose; and 16.2% covered with pediatric doses, of which 84,028 have been applied to children between 5 and 11 years of age.
