Mexico’s security agenda was active this Wednesday, February 2, as the General Luis Cresencio Sandoval, owner of the Secretary of National Defense (Sedena), held two strategic meetings to promote the Army’s relationship with politics both in Mexico as with U.S (USA).

First, around noon, Alejandro Rojas, president of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), announced that he met with the Secretary of Defense; however, this did not happen in his capacity as party leader, but as a member of the National Defense Commission in the Chamber of Deputies.

According to what was referred by the member of the tricolor party, the security agenda was discussed regarding the concerns that Mexicans have.

Today the members of the National Defense Commission of the Chamber of Deputies met with the Secretary of the Sedena, Luis Cresencio Sandoval, to have a broad conversation about the security agenda and the concerns that citizens have on this issue,” Moreno Cárdenas wrote on his official Twitter account along with photographs that attest to the event.

On his own, the General Cresencio Sandoval González gave a more extensive list of who were the participants of said event, since the table of exchange of ideas had at least 30 participants.

“Today with members of the National Defense Commission of the Chamber of Deputies, members of the Sedena Joint Chiefs of Staff, Commanders of the Mexican Army and the Air Force, we held a working meeting to discuss issues of common interest”, he wrote on his social networks.

As if this were not enough, at 5:00 p.m. (Central Mexico time) he published a photo together with Ken Salazar, US Ambassador to Mexico, and mentioned that he is also dealing with issues of security and bilateral relations.

“Today we met with the US ambassador to Mexico, Ken Salazar, to discuss issues of common interest in the bilateral military relationship between the two countries”

The activity of Sedena is to organize, manage and prepare the Mexican Army and Air Force, in order to defend the integrity, independence and sovereignty of the nation; ensure internal security and contribute to national development; however, it also resorts to civil support such as the deployment of rescue elements with the National Plan DN-III-E.

Also, with the arrival of the vaccines against COVID-19, this institution has actively collaborated with the distribution, since the capacity of the personnel and the infrastructure resources that it has, allow it to help in this task.

“On January 28, 2022, 11,011,045 doses of vaccines were available Pfizer, AstraZeneca and Sputnik V, concentrated for batching at the National Cancer Institute (INCAN) and the Biological and Radiological Laboratory of Mexico (BIRMEX); of which 3,441,390 were distributed″, reported the Sedena through a statement.

However, this institution is still subject to political criticism, because with its participation within the Chamber of Deputies in the Legislative Palace of San Lázaro During the opening ceremony of the second period of ordinary sessions of the LXV Legislature, some politicians pointed out an attempt to militarize Mexico.

Militarization advances. The images are the clear expression of how —without restraint— the participation of the military in the entire life of the country advances. Now in the Legislative. It had not happened at the beginning of a Congress period, nor in the last legislature,” Senator Emilio Álvarez Icaza published on his official Twitter account.
