“Archer”: the animated parody of James Bond is a success that has been running for 12 seasons, and promises more

“Archer”, like “Super Agent 86”, has a special grace to make fun of the universe of international spies. (Report by Santiago Garcia)

Since James Bond came to the cinema in the franchise inaugurated by the leading man of Sean Connery, many have copied, imitated and honored him. But parodies have also been very frequent. The Super agent 86 It was the most famous and funniest of all, possibly because it managed to have a life of its own. Archer, the creation of Adam Reed, is one of the most successful variations ever made on the secret agent. It premiered in 2010, it already has 126 episodes —available on Netflix— and still has a lot to offer. Sterling Archer is an agent that cannot be missing when it comes to listing the best characters in the genre.

Sterling Archer (H. Jon Benjamin) is a secret agent who parodies the usual characteristics of this class of male roles in film and television. He is much more than politically incorrect, but he has great courage only matched by his arrogance and lack of common sense when it comes to making decisions. He works for the spy agency known as the International Secret Intelligence Service, where he shares responsibilities with a series of beings as dysfunctional and absurd as he is.

First of all, her boss is none other than her mother: Malory Archer (Jessica Walter). Lana Kane is also there (Aisha Tyler), the most efficient agent, although attracted by the unpresentable Archer; Cyril Figgis (Chris Parnell), an unglamorous colleague, an agency accountant; Cheryl Tunt (Judy Greer), the secretariat, particularly unbalanced; Pam Poovey (Amber Nash), human resources director, robust and prone to addictions, and Ray Gillette (Adam Reed), also a good operative like Lana, gay and with common sense. Finally Dr. Algernop Krieger (Lucky Yates) completes the group as the mad scientist, with a dark past related to Nazism and the most crazy and messianic projects.

The show is set in an intentionally anachronistic universe, with Cold War iconography, but with total freedom to move between different references. The humor extends far beyond the spies: to human relationships, violence, sex, politics, machismo and prejudice. It works in many aspects like a sitcom, thus becoming one of the few dedicated to action and espionage.

The aesthetics of animation is limited, with different techniques and effects to form an original style and at the same time inspired by artists such as Jack Kirby, Roy Lichtenstein Y Steve Ditko. It also looks like the series style Mad Men. But the sum of all these elements make Archer a unique series, a cult object that has managed to extend its popularity beyond the screen. The excellent cast and great voice work is another reason for its success.

For those who were hooked from the beginning, everything was a party. From the first episode they enjoyed the anachronisms, the permanent cultural references and even the internal game of references to future episodes of the series.

Not only James Bond is parody: all the films and action movies of the sixties and seventies have their space. Archer is a fan of Burt Reynolds, who appears in one of the seasons. Too Miami Vice, The Legend of the Golden Ape Y Cosmos 1999 they have dedicated extensive parodies. There are fights against the Nazis; in one of the seasons, when Archer is in a coma, the whole story is a perfect dark movie humorously.

When the series changes seasons, it alters the roles of the characters and the entire plot, but the entire cast is present, playing new characters. The one who always maintains his style is Archer, even when he plays other roles.

With its great actors and many special guests, its adult humor and its freedom to reinvent itself, Archer managed to complete twelve always funny seasons. There is still material for the future, and with its short episodes and short seasons, this is a magnificent series to watch one chapter a day and end the day with a smile, the result of the incorrect irreverence of its protagonist.
