A 4-day-old baby died of coronavirus in the town of Eldorado, Misiones, and is the youngest fatality in the country during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The newborn died Saturday at Samic Hospital in Eldorado. The little boy was born by cesarean section on January 25 and was hospitalized with a reserved prognosis.
As specified by the release of the Ministry of Public Health of Misiones, at birth the baby suffered from edema due to the accumulation of fluids in the body tissues and presented liver failure (hepatosplenomegaly). In addition, due to respiratory problems, he required ARM (mechanical respiratory assistance). He was swabbed at the hospital and tested positive for COVID-19.
At the Eldorado medical center, the baby received two blood transfusions, but “his general condition progressively deteriorated with multiple organ failure and he died on January 29 at 8 a.m.”, according to the health authorities of the province.
The Ministry of Public Health of Misiones reported the baby’s death in the daily coronavirus report for Saturday, January 29. In the report, 7 deaths from the disease were confirmed, among which is the newborn. The baby had not received the vaccine because he was less than 3 years old, as described in the report.
The little boy caught it from his mother, who is having the SARS-CoV-2 infection and is not vaccinated. The health authorities of the province did not confirm the reasons why the mother was not immunized. The woman is still hospitalized for coronavirus.
The Eldorado case would be, so far, the sixth pediatric victim of coronavirus in Misiones. This week the province had already reported the death of a 44-day-old baby and a two-month-old baby.
On the other hand, the epidemiological part of the Ministry of Health of Misiones, indicated thatYesterday there were 1,586 cases of coronavirus in the province and 5 deaths were recorded. With this new report, Misiones has accumulated 70,814 cases and 816 deaths since the start of the pandemic.
The deceased baby is the youngest fatal victim of coronavirus in Argentina. So far, the death of a 35-day-old boy had been reported in the Santa Fe province.
