Since the beginning of the pandemic, the federal government has ordered a total of more than 660 million doses of corona vaccine, which are to be delivered by 2023. This emerges from the response of the federal government to a small request from the left-wing member of the Bundestag Kathrin Vogler, who ARD political magazine Report Mainz available in advance.

These include around 367 million doses of the vaccine from Biontech/Pfizer, 120 million doses from Moderna, but also several million doses of the vaccines Novavax, Valneva and the manufacturer Sanofi. According to the federal government, the vaccines ordered have a total value of around 12.5 billion euros.

Majority of vaccine doses not yet vaccinated

About a quarter of the approximately 660 million doses have been vaccinated in Germany since the beginning of the pandemic. Almost 16 percent of the vaccine was given to other countries, mostly developing countries. That leaves around 400 million doses for the next two years.

If the manufacturers develop new vaccines in the meantime that are adapted to virus variants such as Omikron, these do not have to be ordered separately. The contracts provide that the adapted vaccines can be delivered in place of the old vaccines.

“Want to ensure sufficient supply”

When asked, the Federal Ministry of Health (BMG) said how many of the remaining 400 million vaccine doses are actually to be vaccinated in Germany Report Mainz open minded. The ministry justifies the high order quantities with the aim of ensuring that the population in Germany is adequately supplied at all times. According to the BMG, the aim is to minimize development and production risks by relying on a broad portfolio with different manufacturers and technologies.

According to the supply contracts, Germany is obliged to purchase the entire quantity of vaccine ordered. However, excess vaccine doses could be given to other countries, for example through the COVAX initiative. This is committed to a worldwide even distribution of vaccines.

A reduction in order quantities, on the other hand, is “only possible in agreement with the manufacturers,” writes the ministry. At the request of Report Mainz At the Mainz-based company Biontech, it is said that neither Biontech nor its partner Pfizer have received any requests for such a reduction in order quantities.

More transparency demanded

In view of the high order quantity, the left calls for more transparency in vaccine management. “The total doses ordered correspond to almost eight doses of corona vaccine per head of the population, from babies to old people,” Kathrin Vogler said Report Mainz.

Rich countries like Germany indulge in waste and spoilage, while African countries suffer from serious vaccine shortages. This is irresponsible, especially given that countries such as Nigeria recently had to destroy the vaccine that had been donated because it was only released shortly before the expiration date.
