During the pandemic, many business trips have been replaced by digital formats. Even in the long term, larger companies no longer expect to return to the old practice. This was the result of a survey by the consulting firm PwC.

Frankfurt/Main – Larger companies in Germany do not expect business trips to return to the level before the corona pandemic in the long term. According to a survey by the auditing and consulting company PwC among a good 150 companies with more than 500 employees, 61 percent assume that domestic business trips will largely be replaced by digital formats in the next five years.

47 percent of those surveyed expect this when traveling abroad. Multiple entries were possible. For the current year, two out of three companies surveyed expect their travel volume to be reduced by an average of 36 percent compared to the pre-Corona level. Only 28 percent of the companies expected to reach the level of 2019 again, 7 percent expected a higher value.

Ecological Footprint

In addition to cost savings, climate protection issues are also playing an increasing role in planning. To date, only a third of the companies surveyed (35 percent) have determined the ecological footprint of business trips. Another 13 percent plan to introduce a tool for measurability, 45 percent of those surveyed rule it out. According to the information, every second company has the requirement that the cheapest travel option must be chosen or that this is recommended. From this point of view, ecological goals tend to be regarded as secondary.

However, 62 percent of those surveyed stated that they wanted to expand the use of electric drives. 35 percent opted to switch from air travel to rail or public transport. 28 percent wanted to increase the share of car sharing and e-scooters. Multiple entries were possible. dpa
