Among the nine children of Daniel Ortega’s marriage to Rosario Murillo, Laureano is the one with the highest public profile.
On December 9, he was seen signing the reestablishment of relations with the People’s Republic of China, together with the Chinese Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ma Zhaoxu. Before that, he was in Russia, leading a Nicaraguan government delegation that met with Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov, and a month later, already in Nicaragua, a few hours before his father took office for the fourth consecutive term, he signed the trade agreement called “Silk Road ” with Cao Jianming, President Xi Jinping’s special envoy.
Laureano Ortega Murillo is neither chancellor nor minister. His official title ispresidential investment adviser” but their presence relegates higher-ranking officials. The relevance, however, comes from being the son of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo, the couple of dictators who govern Nicaragua, who apparently cultivate him as their dolphin in the face of a possible family succession in power.
Political analyst Eliseo Núñez says that he does not see Laureano Ortega in immediate succession to Ortega, but only after Rosario Murillo. “She wants to become president to satisfy her ego. Rosario Murillo knows that she is not popular, and not only is she not popular among the opposition but also among the Sandinistas themselves. Laureano has a softer image”, dice.
Instead, the sociologist Orcar René Vargas affirms that Laureano Ortega will be the successor and not Mrs. Murillo. “Rosario Murillo has already burned. It does not create consensus either for the outside or for the inside. There is a faction of Ortega that supports Murillo but there are also those who react against it. Her time was up. The 2018 rebellion was a personal defeat for Rosario Murillo and that is why he gave the order to ‘let’s go with everything’ and now he is accused of crimes against humanity,” he says.
“Laureano Ortega has no record of crimes against humanity and acts as de facto foreign minister. If you look, it has moved in Russia, China and the Middle East, which is where the money that the regime is looking for is, ”he adds.
Laureano Facundo, 40, is the sixth child of the Ortega Murillo couple. Contrary to his father who is careless in his dress, with big shoes, jacket and baseball cap even in his own inauguration, Laureano is a catrín. He wears fine suits that hide a totally tattooed left arm, he wears Rolex watches worth more than 40 thousand dollars and when he studied in Costa Rica he drove a Porsche Carrera 911, which can cost between 130 thousand and 250 thousand dollars.
Sibarita As it is, the Ortega Murillo dolphin was the special guest of a big “Russian party” held in January 2016 to celebrate the inauguration of the Mechnikov vaccine plant in Managua, and in which more than 50 thousand were spent. Dollars. The place was decorated with giant matryoshka dolls, liquors and sandwiches of the highest quality were served.
“For this party they brought more than 50 kilos of food from Russia in thermal containers, including Russia’s richest delicacy, the beluga black caviar A kilogram of this delicacy that was available in large quantities at the party can cost up to 10 thousand dollars. In addition to food and drinks, it has been brought to two Russian opera singers, a special gift for Laureano”, explained Vitalii Granovskii, the former manager of the vaccine factory, in an interview with the newspaper the press from Nicaragua.
Daniel Ortega’s son is a fan of Rolex watches and has been seen on different occasions using different copies of the same brand. the press recorded that, in July 2014, when the Chinese canal investor Wang Jing arrived in Nicaragua, Ortega Murillo received him wearing a Rolex Day-Date President Platinum Ice Blue Roman 118206 “available only in gold or platinum” and whose price is 43,200 dollars in the United States. A primary school teacher in Nicaragua would need the salary of 17 years of work to pay for a watch like that, the newspaper calculated.
Laureano Ortega is also the undisputed star of opera festivals organized by the Incanto Foundation. He is a tenor and the entire public apparatus is available for the son of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo to shine.
“Nicaraguan tenor with extensive experience as a protagonist, producer and promoter of opera in Nicaragua,” says his biography on the Incanto page. “He studied music since he was 17 years old with the renowned teacher Alberto San José Molina, who invited him to join the Grupo Lírico de Nicaragua, being, in addition to founder, the member with the longest tenure to date. Then he entered the middle level of singing at the UPOLI Conservatory of Music”.
“She has participated in improvement courses with different singing teachers, among which the soprano Lucetta Bizzi and the baritone Claudio Ottino from Italy stand out, and the soprano Conchita Frankie from Cuba. He attended courses and master classes at the Luigi Boccherini Conservatories of Lucca, Giuseppe Verdi of Milan and at the Academy of the Fondazione Festival Puccini in Italy”, adds the official page.
A source close to the Ortega Murillo family told Infobae that Laureano’s fondness for opera would have been induced by Daniel Ortega himself, who liked to hear that kind of music at home and sometimes even took to singing. “Possibly he is a frustrated tenor”, dice.
An investigation of the digital newspaper Article 66, determined that, in the three years after its foundation, Incanto received a total of 8.3 million cordobas (about 250 thousand dollars) from the public budget, earmarked for the payment of air tickets, travel expenses, salaries, food and lodging for the Italian masters invited to the Puccinian festivals that it organizes.
Little is known about the private life of this son of the Nicaraguan presidential couple. In a resume prepared by Laureano Ortega himself for the XV Congress of Civil Engineering in 2016 he describes himself as a married man, fluent in Spanish, English and Italian.
He studied Audiovisual Production (Film and TV) at the Veritas University, in San José, Costa Rica; Music at the Luigi Boccherini Musical Institute of Lucca, Giussepe Verdi Conservatory, Milan, Italy; Sociology at the Central American University (UCA) and Political Science at the Thomas More University, the latter two in Managua.
As presidential adviser for investments, he says that he is responsible for “making country presentations to international investors, organizing familiarization trips, promoting investment opportunities in Nicaragua in foreign media, organizing and managing business-to-business meetings with foreign capital. and attention to business and diplomatic delegations”.
For the political analyst Eliseo Núñez, that the dictatorship is already thinking about a third level of family succession “is bad news for Nicaragua.”
He says that Laureano has been chosen over the rest of the children “because the others do not meet the requirements they are looking for.” Rafael Ortega, the eldest of the sons and who directs the oil business, is ruled out, adds Núñez, “because he is only the son of Rosario Murillo.”
“Laureano has the characteristic that he is the biological son of both and has rubbed shoulders with big capital. They believe that it is an efficient way to get an ‘outbreak’ in the family. He has characteristics that would already make him an integral part of the rich families of the country and he is not simply an assimilated. At the end of the day, what Ortega wants is to be part of the oligarch families of Nicaragua,” says Núñez.
