LIVERPOOL, England (AP) — Argentine Emiliano Buendía scored as Aston Villa beat Everton 1-0 in the English Premier League in Liverpool on Saturday.
Lucas Digne kicked a corner kick that Buendía converted with a header to the far post with the final seconds of the first half playing out.
In the ensuing goal celebration, Digne, who had just transferred from Everton, was hit on the head by a bottle thrown from the stands. Digne fell to the ground, clutching her head. Matty Cash, also of Villa, said he had taken a hit.
French left-back Digne was sold by Everton after an incident with manager Rafa Benítez, who was sacked shortly after.
Former Liverpool players Steven Gerrard and Philippe Coutinho returned to Villa as manager and player, and both they and Digne suffered a hostile reception from the stands.
In the second half, Everton went on the attack and had good chances to equalise. Two headers by Colombian Yerry Mina went just wide, and one by Ben Godfrey was saved by Argentine Emi Martínez, Villa’s goalkeeper.
The match between Brentford and Wolverhampton was abandoned after 34 minutes because a drone was flying over the field. The result at that time was 0-0.
Previously the match was stopped for several minutes due to a heavy head butt between Mathias Jensen and Rico Henry, both from Brentford, who left the pitch bleeding and were substituted.
