The Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas, No.4 in the world, needed time and energy to eliminate the Argentine Sebastián Baez (88th) 7-6 (7/1), 6-7 (5/7), 6-3, 6-4, this Thursday in the second round of the Australian Open.
“It wasn’t easy,” the 23-year-old acknowledged. “It was a great fight and I’m glad I got over the hump.”
After the two tie breaks, Tsitsipas nevertheless managed to gain control. “I tried to take more risks,” he explained, noting that he “played with (his) heart.”
A two-time semifinalist in Melbourne (2019 and 2021) and a finalist at Roland Garros last year, Tsitsipas will face either Grigor Dimitrov (28th) or Benoît Paire (56th) on Saturday.
“Whether it’s one or the other, I’ll be ready,” he assured.
