René Tilsen, Head of Generation at Stadtwerke Schwerin, is delighted: “After an extensive planning phase and a year of dismantling, we can finally start installing the new technology in our combined heat and power plant. With a length of 10 and a diameter of 2 meters, it is the high-pressure heating condenser is the first of a number of large components for our rebuilt power plant.”
Turning old into new: modernization will be completed in 2023
Overall, we will install two heating condensers in order to optimize the power indicator, i.e. the ratio of power output and heat output, for our power plant. At the same time, the Stadtwerke are already preparing the steel construction for our two new gas turbines, which are currently still on the sea route from Long Beach in the USA to Zeebrugge in Belgium.
When the modernization measures are completed in early 2023, Stadtwerke Schwerin will operate one of the most modern and efficient natural gas power plants in the world. Despite the renovation work, the heat and power supply for Schwerin households is secured at all times. At the end of 2021, for example, a 135-ton rental boiler was installed on the power plant site, which can be switched on to generate heat if required.
With the modernization of the combined heat and power plant, the construction of the geothermal plant in Schwerin Lankow, the operation of a biogas plant and the expansion of the company’s own photovoltaic systems, Stadtwerke Schwerin are consistently pursuing their goal of reducing CO2 emissions in the generation of heat and electricity.
