According to the first versions, the fire would have started due to an alleged grass burning by the inhabitants of the region, who are dedicated to agriculture; however, the fire reached an active line of the Mexican parastatal, which already had leak reports for a few weeks.

Via social networks, Internet users reported that the smoke could be observed from the Villahermosa-Coatzacoalcos highway that connects the state with Veracruz. Meanwhile, the Civil Protection authorities reported that so far no injured people have been reported, in addition to the fact that there are no risks for the residents who live in the surroundings.
