Pedro Salmerón Sanginés He reappeared in trends on different social networks this Monday, January 17, after the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) and President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) proposed his name for consideration by the Senate of the Republic as a new Ambassador of Mexico in Panama.

However, minutes after the Foreign Ministry statement came to light, the controversies surrounding the doctor in History from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) became evident again, especially the public complaints for alleged cases of harassment against eight women belonging to the Fourth Transformation.

through the hashtag #AHarasserShouldNotBeAmbassador, Internet users, mainly women, launched a petition to the SRE so that the appointment of Salmerón Sanginés be reconsidered; In addition, they remembered the story that Estefanía Veloz shared in 2020 where she gave an account of her experience with the former director of the National Institute of Historical Studies on Revolutions in Mexico (INEHRM).

On September 11, 2020, the host of the program In good faith shared that she, together with seven militant women of the National Regeneration Movement (Morena) filed a harassment complaint inside the political party against Salmerón.

According to the story that Veloz issued on his Twitter account, the academic had a modus operandi very similar with all the victims, because during his visits to different states of the republic in the pre-campaign of the now Mexican president “harassed and insulted (publicly) those who rejected him”.

He added that it was not the first time this had happened, well, he said, inside Morena they knew how Pedro Salmerón behaved; however, he stated that he was allegedly protected by his “important friends”, who prevented him from facing the actions resulting from his actions.

“I tell you that in 2017 we got together, 8 companions from the party -Morena- to file a complaint against Pedro Salmerón for harassing. It turns out that in all the states he visited during -the- campaign he harassed and insulted (publicly) those who rejected him. The party knows who Pedro is, but he has very important friends, these from the old left guard, those who make decisions”

However, the case within Morena is not the only one that persecutes the historian, since he was also denounced for harassment at the Autonomous Technological Institute of Mexico (ITAM). It was in 2019 when through the movement Me Too, female students of said university institution accused the academic of not being professional and bordering on harassment in his dealings with women, which caused him to resign.

Faced with such memories, many people expressed their disapproval of the appointment on social networks, scenarios where comments such as the following could be read: “Do not come here to say that complaints ruin men’s lives when Pedro Salmerón’s stalker has just be appointed as ambassador of Panama”, “Pedro Salmerón Sanguinés is a stalker, victimizer”, “No ‘feminist foreign policy’ would appoint a stalker as ambassador”.

However, as on those occasions, this Monday the 17th the former official also used his Twitter account to defend himself and assured in different messages where it was mentioned that the saccusations are only “slander” against him.

Nobody accused me. And Veloz’s moral quality is known. (Those tweets are from the moment when we revealed what Gibran’s ‘current’ meant, we did with documents). Period,” he wrote.

Although the harassment scandals are not the only ones that have broken out against the historian, since in 2019 the postdoctoral fellow from the National School of Anthropology and History (ENAH) resigned from INEHRM after having expressed that the members of the Communist League 23 were some “brave young men” when murdering businessman Eugenio Garza Sada.

Having said the above and presenting his resignation, President López Obrador pointed out that Pedro Salmerón “is worth more as an investigator than as an official”; however, he continued in the controversy, since he was pointed out by Enrique Márquez de have started a “dirty campaign” against Brenda Lozano, current added culture of Mexico in Spain.

Finally, another of his scandals occurred in Morena when he asked the National Commission of Honesty and Justice for expulsion of four deputies of the bench in San Lázaro, after they voted him as persona non grata.

“I have just formally sent this lawsuit to the CHJ_Morena and to Dr. Héctor Díaz-Polanco about ‘personas non grata’”
