Coronavirus in Mexico as of January 17: 17 thousand 101 infections and 59 deaths were registered in the last day

The Ministry of Health (SSa) released updated figures on the progress of the COVID-19 pandemic in Mexico. In this way, until 5:00 p.m. on Monday, January 17 4 million 385 thousand 415 total cases and 301 thousand 469 deaths were registered since the pandemic began, in March 2020. With these figures, In the last 24 hours, 17,101 infections and 59 deaths were added to the statistics.

In addition, the federal agency reported that 612,236 suspected cases have been registered in the country; 8 million 166 thousand 281 negative cases and 269 thousand 331 confirmed active cases, which refer to those infections that began with symptoms in the last 14 days (from January 4 to 17).

This last aspect allows health authorities to identify the areas with the highest viral activity and risk of contagion of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. In this regard, the states with the most confirmed active cases are the following: Mexico City with 63 thousand 317 cases; Mexico state (20 thousand 089), Nuevo Leon (16 thousand 13), San Luis Potosi (13 thousand 588); Guanajuato (12 thousand 693) and Tabasco, with 11 thousand 61 cases.

Since the beginning of the health emergency, the federal authorities have registered the total number of infections accumulated by federal entity. Until the cutoff at 5:00 p.m. on January 17, the Mexico City has accumulated one million 99 thousand 47 cases, followed by the State of Mexico (413 thousand 167); New Leon (232 thousand 762); Guanajuato (223 thousand 301); Jalisco (182 thousand 496); Tabasco (158 thousand 471); Sonora (134 thousand 224); Puebla (133 thousand 385); Veracruz (130 thousand 988) and San Luis Potosi, with 128 thousand 765 total infections since March 2020.

According to the distribution by sex and age of confirmed deaths due to SARS-CoV 2, the SSa highlighted that the predominance of SARS-CoV-2 it is 62% in men and reiterated that the average age of deaths is 64 years. In this area and, based on the last cut, the states with the highest number of deaths are: Mexico City (52 thousand 984); Mexico state (33 thousand 195); Jalisco (17 thousand 718); Puebla (15 thousand 806); Veracruz (14 thousand 889) and New Lion (13 thousand 912).

Finally, in the number of confirmed cases there is a predominance of contagion in women, with 50.9% and the general median age is 39 years. In addition to this, the SSa pointed out that in the last five weeks, most of the infections are in the group of 18 to 29 years.

So far, the Health Secretary reported that in the country 156 million 39 thousand 921 vaccines against COVID-19 have been applied, of which 157 thousand 442 were supplied in national territory last Sunday, January 16.

In addition, the agency specified that 82 million 919 thousand 418 people have been immunized; of that number, 75 million 678 thousand 648 of people already have complete schematics; while seven million 240 thousand 770 people have only one biological application in the midst of the emergence of the Omicron variant.

According to the latest information from the Mexican Genomic Surveillance Consortium, Delta continues to dominate in some states. However, the latest reports from the Consortium dated January 10 indicate that Ómicron is in at least 19 entities.
