Less and less is missing for the best competitions on the UCI calendar to start in 2022. The best riders in the world continue to prepare for what will be a new cycling season where great battles between the great bosses will surely be seen.

The Giro d’Italia, the first major of the year, will be the goal of some of the most important cyclists in the peloton. Miguel Ángel López, Mikel Landa, Alejandro Valverde and Tom Dumoulin They are some of those who will go in search of the Maglia Rosa and be the successor of Colombian Egan Bernal, current champion of the competition.

And it is precisely one of them, the Dutch From the mill, is clear that to return to compete side by side with the best of the international squad, he must do a fairly demanding preparation.

It should be remembered that the 31-year-old rider surprised the cycling world just under a year ago, after issuing a statement on January 23, 2021 announcing his temporary retirement from cycling. The reason? The runner declared that he had to fight against his “internal demons”, caused by great episodes of stress, mental exhaustion and loss of motivation.

From the mill He had run the Tour de France months before, where he had closed his participation in the Top-10, and later withdrew from the Vuelta a España in the eighth stage due to accumulated fatigue. His team, the Jumbo-Visma, accepted the situation naturally and gave him the necessary space to meet again.

Now, the runner has found the time to return and is already preparing what will be his participation in the Tour of Italy, his main challenge for this year.

In that sense, Dumoulin will seek to get ready in the mountains, decisive terrain in the grand tours, and he has already chosen the country in which he will carry out pre-season work.

According to the Dutch media Wielerflits, Tom would have opted for Colombia to do his respective preparation, because it is no secret to anyone that the roads of the coffee country have become a great training ground for the vast majority of elite cyclists . Local runners such as Egan Bernal, Nairo Quintana, Daniel Felipe Martínez, Rigoberto Urán, among others, prefer to prepare their seasons in Colombia instead of doing it in European territory.

According to the aforementioned portal, the Dutch cyclist, from Team Jumbo-Visma, will travel to Medellin in the next few days to take advantage of the height of Rionegro and thus arrive with the best preparation for the UAE Tour, the rider’s first race, which will take place on February 20 and 26.

But Dumoulin’s decision has support, since, as confirmed by Wielerflits, his compatriot, the female Movistar runner Annemiek van Vleuten I would have recommended training in Colombia. “He has sent them all the information about a stay in the South American country. The Olympic time trial champion has already been to Colombia twice for a high-altitude training camp”, published the Dutch portal.

Thus, the 31-year-old runner will be in Colombia with his partner Koen Bouwman preparing his goals, just as runners such as Chris Froome, Julian Alaphilippe, Bob Jungels, Peter Sagan, among others, did at the time.

Colombia is an ideal place to start the season (…) The atmosphere, the weather, the good roads and the pleasant temperature at high altitude. If you do an altitude training course in Tenerife or Sierra Nevada in Europe in January or February, you run the risk of ending up in the snow”, commented the Briton, who was in Colombia in 2019 preparing his calendar.

In conclusion, Tom will be in Colombia preparing for his participation in the UAE Tour, the Strade Bianche, the Vuelta a Catalunya and the Amstel Gold Race, careers prior to his presence in the Tour of Italy, competition that will finish preparing in a training course at height in Tenerife.

More and more cyclists are finding in Colombia an alternative to high-altitude training camps at the beginning of the season, because in Europe only Tenerife is suitable for a training camp due to its weather conditions.
