Toluca comes back and thrashes Santos Laguna in Mexico

MEXICO CITY, Jan 16 (Reuters) – Toluca overcame an adverse score on Sunday and thrashed Santos Laguna 3-1 on the second day of the Grita México C22 tournament with goals from Daniel Álvarez, Uruguayan Leonardo Fernández and Brazilian Diego Rigonato.

In the match played at the Nemesio Diez stadium in Toluca, Santos Laguna’s “Guerreros” opened the scoring in the 22nd minute when Ecuadorian Ayrton Preciado volleyed a long center sent from the right sector into the small area.

Toluca equalized in the 41st minute through Álvarez, who defined with a powerful shot after goalkeeper Carlos Acevedo rejected a shot by Brazilian Camilo Sanvezzo.

The “Red Devils” came back in the 56th minute when Fernández finished off a center sent by Sanvezzo from the right sector in the small area.

The team led by Ignacio Ambriz scored the third goal in the 80th minute with a powerful volley shot from Rigonato inside the area.

Later, Guadalajara will visit Pachuca.

The match between Mazatlán and América was rescheduled for February 16 due to maintenance being carried out on the field of the Kraken stadium, headquarters of Mazatlán.

On Saturday, the reigning champion Atlas entered the tournament with a 1-0 win over Atlético de San Luis. The “Rojinegros” del Atlas had no action on the first day in order to have more rest days after having played the final of the previous tournament on December 12.

In the other matches on Saturday, Puebla beat Tigres UANL 2-0 away, Cruz Azul beat Bravos de Ciudad Juárez 1-0, while Tijuana and León tied 1-1.

At the start of the day, Pumas UNAM won 3-1 as a visitor to Querétaro on Friday and Monterrey thrashed 4-0 on their visit to Necaxa.
