“We are very hungry” for trophies, says Courtois

Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois recalled this Saturday on the eve of the Spanish Super Cup final against Athletic Bilbao that last year the meringues could not win anything and “we are very hungry.”

“We all know we’re playing in a final, we want to win it and that’s why the coach (Carlo Ancelotti) says that we don’t need to motivate ourselves because we’re playing for a trophy,” Courtois said at the press conference prior to the match to be played at the King Fahd stadium from Riyadh.

“Last year we couldn’t win any trophies and we’re very hungry,” said the Real Madrid goalkeeper, who warns, however, against the rival.

“We know it’s a very strong team and it’s going to be a tough game,” Courtois said.

The Belgian international goalkeeper emphasized set pieces as one of the great dangers of the ‘Lions’, who thus won 2-1 over Atlético de Madrid in the semifinal of the Super Cup.

“Of course, the set piece is fundamental today. This year we have changed a bit the way we position ourselves at corners and at free kicks, we have to adapt, but I think we do it well,” said Courtois.

The merengue goalkeeper recalled the two games against Athletic in December, specifying that “in the home game we suffered a bit from set pieces, but in the second leg in San Mamés we defended well. We know that tomorrow we have to be strong defensively with corners in plays set pieces”.

Courtois took advantage of his appearance to praise his young Brazilian teammate Vinicius, whom he stated that “he has improved a lot, he is a talent that is improving, also with confidence”.

“He is a boy with a lot of quality and this year he is ‘plugging in’. He helps us a lot and the whole team is delighted with him,” said Courtois, who also spoke about his compatriot Eden Hazard, who is playing little.

“Eden continues to work, training well and the manager’s decisions are not easy, there are wingers who are doing very well,” said Courtois.

“Eden has shown that he is there, that he is one of the team and if he has to play tomorrow, he will give 100% and help us,” concluded the merengue goalkeeper.
