The reason why Profeco and Cofepris suspended the sale of some cereal brands

The Federal Consumer Protection Office (prophet) announced this Friday that they ordered the immobilization of about 380 thousand pieces of products Kellogg’s, the agri-food giant of the United States.

Through a statement, the agency explained that it is a precautionary measure after the company breached in various presentations with the NOM-051 food labeling standard.

And it is that after carrying out verification visits at the national level, in conjunction with the Protection against Sanitary Risks (Cofepris) detected that some brands such as Corn Flakes, Rice Krispies y Special K Original present irregularities in their packaging, such as skip stamps for excess calories or added sugars and feature interactive legends or images on products with warning seals.

In this regard, they pointed out that Kellogg´s cannot verify that its consumers are properly informed about the products they buy.

“The national regulation requires that nutritional information be declared in clear, visible, indelible characters and in contrasting colors. The manufacturers of prepackaged food and non-alcoholic beverages of Mexican and imported products, who have the obligation to comply with current regulations”

These are all the products that cannot be sold in the country at the moment:

– brand corn flakes Kellogg’s Corn Flakes.

– Granulated corn flakes added with vitamins and iron, granulated packer marca Kellogg’s.

– Puffed rice cereal with vitamins and iron, brand Kellogg’s Rice Krispies.

– Wheat, corn and rice cereal, with vitamins and minerals, natural flavor with whole grain brand Kellogg’s Special K Original.

– Wheat, corn, rice, oatmeal and wheat bran cereal with almonds, vanilla flavor with almonds and natural essence of vanilla with whole grain, brand Kellogg’s Special K Equilibrio.

– Wheat, corn, rice, oatmeal and wheat bran cereal with red fruits, vitamins and minerals, blueberry and blackberry flavor with whole grain, brand Kellogg’s Special K Antioxidantes.

– Wheat, corn, rice and oat cereal mixed with flakes with chocolate flavor coverage and notes of latte coffee and whole grain, brand Kellogg’s Special K Energy.

It is worth mentioning that the Michigan-based company arrived in Mexico more than 90 years ago and represents one of its most important markets worldwide, since in the last five years they obtained profits of more than 100 million dollars.

Until now, The company has not commented or issued any information in this regard.

The agency indicated that in the event that consumers detect any product that does not meet these specifications, such as including warning seals on the back or sides of products, You are invited to report it.
