The health authorities have reported 45,690 new infections and an increased seven-day incidence of 387.9 to the RKI. The numbers continue to rise. However, there are major regional differences.

The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) has recorded 45,690 new corona infections. That’s 15,129 cases, or around 50 percent more than a week ago when 30,561 positive tests were reported. The nationwide seven-day incidence rose to 387.9 from 375.7 the previous day. The value indicates how many people per 100,000 inhabitants have been infected with the corona virus in the past seven days.

Another 322 people died related to the virus. This brings the total number of reported deaths since the start of the pandemic to 114,351. In total, more than 7.58 million corona tests have so far been positive in Germany. The number of corona intensive care patients in hospitals had fallen further to 3,224 on Monday.

Omikron variant ensures strong spread

The increase in numbers that has been visible for days is primarily attributed to the spread of the highly contagious virus variant Omikron, which has already caused high levels of infection in other European countries and the USA. On Monday, 1.35 million new infections in the USA, a new global high since the pandemic began, according to a survey by the Reuters news agency based on official data.

In Germany, the focus is still clearly in northern Germany and there with the city-states: In Bremen the value rises to 1185.1, in Berlin it is 737.2 and in Hamburg it is 581.1. Schleswig-Holstein has an incidence of 587.3 and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania of 419.4. The value is lowest in Saxony-Anhalt at 274.2. The RKI stated last Thursday that the Omikron variant was hardly widespread in Saxony-Anhalt until then, but was already clearly dominant in Bremen.
