Recently, the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi) announced the value that the Measurement and Update Unit (UMA) will have, which will come into effect from next February. According to the institution chaired by Graciela Márquez Colín, the UMA is “the unit of account, index, base, measure or economic reference in pesos to determine the amount of payment of obligations and assumptions provided for in federal and state laws, as well as in the legal provisions that emanate from all of the above ”.

Thus, there will be increases in fines and traffic offenses, taxes, different government procedures, benefits and mortgage loans that are calculated based on the following values.

1. Daily value of the UMA: 96.22 pesos

2. Monthly value of the UMA: 2 thousand 925.09 pesos

3. Annual value of the UMA: 35 thousand 101.38 pesos

The UMA will be used individually or in multiples to determine administrative sanctions and fines, according to the Traffic Regulations of the CDMX and Edomex (Photo: Cuartoscuro.com)

Notably Graciela Marquez Colin, president of the Institute, indicated through her official Twitter account that the increase was derived from the annual headline inflation of 2021, which closed at 7.36%, a figure that exceeded the forecasts of the Bank of Mexico (Banxico). It should be noted that inflation is defined as the generalized and sustained increase in the cost of goods and services in the country’s economy over time.

For this reason, Self-service stores, markets and flea markets throughout the country registered a significant increase in essential products. According to the National Consumer Price Index (INPC) at the beginning of December 2021, the price of processed foods was 11.7% above 2020.
