Lauterbach on Omikron-Welle: “A dynamic situation”

As of: 12/29/2021 10:11 p.m.

The current Corona data is hardly meaningful because little is tested over the holidays. Health Minister Lauterbach speaks in the daily topics with a view to Omikron of sharply increasing numbers – and wants to draw conclusions from them.

Federal Health Minister Karl Lauterbach has again pointed out that the Omikron variant is on the advance in Germany.

“The Omikron variant is increasing significantly, especially in the north of the country. We are seeing very strong increases in numbers in Bremen, Hamburg, Schleswig-Holstein, and also in North Rhine-Westphalia,” said the SPD politician in the daily topics.

The fact that Omikron is now expanding there is partly due to its proximity to Denmark and the Netherlands, Lauterbach continues. The two neighboring countries are currently particularly affected by Omikron.

The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) recently reported an increase in Omikron cases of 26 percent within 24 hours in Germany. The authority assigns a total of 13,129 infections to the Omikron variant – the number of unreported cases is likely to be high, however.

Doubling in four to five days

“We have a dynamic situation – that is a bit different from what we had a week ago,” added the Federal Minister of Health. He expects the number of omicron cases to double within four to five days. As far as omicron distribution is concerned, Germany is not very different from other countries.

“Good suggestions” – next week at the latest

It is now a matter of considering what conclusions should be drawn from this – for example with a view to the quarantine duration or contact reductions, Lauterbach continues.

By next week at the latest he wants to present “good suggestions” as to what further measures are necessary in the fight against Omikron. “We have to prepare something like this properly, a quick shot is wrong. The Expert Council is currently dealing with this situation, as is the Robert Koch Institute,” he said.

Lauterbach also pointed out that the officially reported corona numbers did not reflect the actual situation. The reasons: There will be fewer tests over the holidays and the tests that are being done are reported to the health authorities too late. And these in turn reported the data later. “This is due to the shortage of staff and the holidays,” said Lauterbach. He wants to change the fact that too few staff are employed in the health authorities next year.

The health minister again appealed to all citizens who have not yet been boosted to do so as soon as possible. “This is the best protection against Omicron.”
