Last Hour: Light earthquake is reported in Puerto Peñasco

The Center for Instrumentation and Seismic Registration of Mexico (Cires) reported an earthquake of magnitude 4.7 on the Richter scale near Puerto Peñasco, being 02:32 in local time (08:32 UTC). With a depth of 27 kilometers, it was perceived as light by the inhabitants of the town.

Still there are no details about material damages or victims as a consequence of this earthquake, due to the recentness of the episode.

It is worth noting that Mexico is in constant risk to experience an earthquake of great magnitude, such as those that occurred in 1985 and 2017. Such movements caused several misfortunes. Despite being the most remembered, they have not been the largest in the territory.

The March 28, 1787, the strongest earthquake recorded in the country occurred. Oaxaca, then the central point of the Spanish colony, was the victim of a movement of 8.6 on the Richter scale. That event was so impetuous that it was followed by a tsunami that reached 6 kilometers inland.

Experts from the Center for Instrumentation and Seismic Registration (Cires) estimate that it will be possible to repeat similar situations in the near future. These conclusions emerged from a study dated 2009 that attempted to analyze the aforementioned event. It was said then that there may be earthquakes of a similar magnitude off the coasts of Mexico and Central America. This is because this area has great potential for events of a geological nature, given its location in the so-called Brecha de Guerrero.

But even smaller earthquakes can cause great damage. Example of the above were the seismic events of 1985 and 2017. On those occasions, the lives of the residents of Mexico City were turned upside down, while both the Government and private citizens rebuilt buildings and infrastructure.

On September 19, 1985, an earthquake occurred in magnitude 8.2 on the Richter scale, with an epicenter in the state of Guerrero. It was 07:19 local time (13:19 GMT). At that time, it was thought that there would be no more earthquakes of such dimensions, but a related event occurred exactly 32 years later.

In 2017, it happened at 1:14 p.m. local time (18:30 GMT), with its epicenter in an area between the states of Puebla and Morelos. So, the fatalities reached 369 people.
