Egypt reports first cases of omicron

CAIRO (AP) – Egyptian health authorities said Saturday they have identified the first cases in the country of the omicron variant of the coronavirus.

Three people were found to have the strain among 26 travelers who tested positive for coronavirus at Cairo International Airport, the Health Ministry reported in a statement late Friday. It didn’t say where the three came from.

Local news outlet Masrawy reported that the three were among the travelers from South Africa.

The ministry said that two of the infected people showed no symptoms, while the third exhibited mild symptoms. The three were isolated in a Cairo hospital, he added.

Authorities on Friday reported more than 900 new confirmed cases of coronavirus and 43 deaths in the past 24 hours. Egypt has reported 373,500 cases and 21,277 deaths since the pandemic began.
