Leader of the table, FC Bayern Munich, scored a lackluster, but ultimately sovereign work victory against VfL Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga. Robert Lewandowski set a new record.
FC Bayern Munich has not shown any nakedness even after winning the first half of the first half of the Bundesliga championship. In the corona-related ghost game against the troubled VfL Wolfsburg there was a 4-0 (1-0) work victory on Friday evening (December 17th, 2021). Thomas Müller (7th minute) gave Munich an early lead. Dayot Upamecano (57th) and Leroy Sané (59th) increased, Robert Lewandowski (87th) made the final score and set a new record.
The starting position could not have been more different: With a sovereign 5-0 win in Stuttgart, the Munich team secured the first half of the season for the 25th time during the week. Wolfsburg, on the other hand, was already deeply in crisis after the 2: 3 against 1. FC Köln under coach Florian Kohfeldt and has now lost all of the past seven competitive games.
Müller refines his 400th Bundesliga game
Right from the start, the “wolves” were primarily behind in Munich, playing defensively with a five-man chain. It broke after just seven minutes. A shot by Serge Gnabry from 25 meters let VfL goalkeeper Koen Casteels bounce forward, Müller was once again spot on in his 400th Bundesliga game and took the lead.
Wolfsburg too hesitant offensively
In return, Wolfsburg striker Wout Weghorst, who failed from the right pentagon against the strongly reacting Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, missed the chance to equalize. As a result, Wolfsburg lacked the courage to really take a risk offensively – another good attempt by Weghorst (33rd) didn’t change that.
Apparently, VfL first wanted to prevent a clear defeat. The Munich team meanwhile played down their boots, Jamal Musiala (25th) missed the chance to extend the lead from seven meters.
Double strike decides the game
FC Bayern had more possession of the ball in the second half, but initially there was a lack of determination, surprise moments and pace. Apparently, the Munich wanted to get the three points through routine in the gentle cycle. That succeeded: Upamecano after a strong pass from Müller increased to 2-0 after almost an hour with a head from close range, Sané let the 3-0 follow 130 seconds later with a flick from the edge of the penalty area.
New record: Lewandowski hits 43 times a calendar year
With the double strike, the game was decided. Little or nothing came from Wolfsburg. Robert Lewandowski (66./76.) Left two good chances before he scored from close range shortly before the end. As a result, the Pole has replaced Gerd Müller (42) as the record scorer in one calendar year with 43 goals.
Bayern receives Mönchengladbach, Wolfsburg has to go to Bochum
