The executive secretary of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), Alicia Bárcena, has announced the end of her term, after 13 years in the position.

During a meeting of the Plenary Committee of ECLAC, Bárcena has detailed that he has agreed with the Secretary General of the United Nations, António Guterres, that the date on which he will close his cycle in the organization will be March 31, 2022.

“Thus ended a rich cycle at the UN that has included the best years of my professional career,” he indicated, as CEPAL itself has reported on its Twitter social network account.

Bárcena became ECLAC’s executive secretary on July 1, 2008. Previously, she had served as deputy general secretary for Management at the United Nations headquarters in New York and fulfilled tasks as chief of staff and as deputy chief of cabinet for the then secretary. UN General Kofi Annan.

At ECLAC, she held the position of Deputy Executive Secretary and Director of the Environment and Human Settlements Division.
