The idea of tenant electricity has not really sparked off in Germany so far, not only because of the bureaucratic, regulatory hurdles, but also because of the lack of nationwide service providers with whom property owners and housing companies work together on such projects.
QCells, a manufacturer of solar modules and the start-up Metergrid want to change that and offer their services throughout Germany. QCells takes on the role of general contractor and electricity supplier. The company plans, builds and operates the tenant electricity systems. Metergrid, in turn, takes care of the management and billing of the systems. The partners are currently implementing an initial pilot project on an apartment building with 29 parties in Freiburg. (lm)
