SMA Solar Technology wins contract for RWE mega battery

RWE wants to build a battery storage system with a total output of 117 MW by the end of 2022. The special thing about it is that the lithium-ion batteries are distributed over two locations and should be virtually connected to one another. In Lingen 45 MW are to be connected to the grid, in Werne even 72 MW. It is now clear who should provide the technology required to integrate the overall system.

Among other things, SMA Solar Technology AG from Niesetal in Hessen is to deliver 47 battery inverters. The company is one of the world’s top-selling inverter manufacturers and operates all over the world. The RWE storage facility is so far the largest of its kind. Not only is the volume of output sought impressive, but also the combination with the existing RWE run-of-river power plant on the Moselle. By increasing or decreasing the flow rate at these systems, the Essen-based company wants to provide additional power as control energy and increase the total output of the batteries by around 15 percent.
