Buenos Aires, Nov 22 (EFE) .- The Argentine government announced on Monday the donation of one million Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccines against covid-19, a shipment destined for Vietnam, Mozambique and the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States ( OECS), according to official sources.
“At other times, Argentina was receptive to donations of vaccines. Now, our stock of vaccines and the vaccination rates make it possible for Argentina to join this solidarity system and make donations,” said the Argentine Foreign Minister, Santiago Cafiero, in a press conference at Ezeiza Buenos Aires airport.
Most of these doses will go to Vietnam (500,000) and Mozambique (450,000), while in the coming days the OECS will receive 18,000 for Saint Lucia, 11,000 for Grenada, another 11,000 for Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and a final shipment of 2,000 for Dominica.
Likewise, the South American country, which received the donation of more than seven million vaccines in the past, is working with other nations such as Barbados, Nicaragua, Angola, Kenya and the Philippines to donate more doses in the near future.
“We are in that virtuous circle of reciprocity and solidarity, because until each country has access to vaccines we are not going to turn the page on this pandemic. The pandemic has not ended and access to vaccines has not been equitable,” he said. the Argentine Minister of Health, Carla Vizzotti.
The official also highlighted the progress in the Argentine vaccination campaign: 94% of those over 50 years of age started their vaccination scheme and 90% have completed it.
On the other hand, the epidemiological situation has been “stable with a very slight increase” for five weeks, despite the fact that 87% of the variants detected in Argentina correspond to the Delta, according to Vizzotti.
In Argentina, 65.9 million doses have been applied so far and more than 81.7 million have been distributed, according to the latest official data.
A total of 36.1 million people have received the first dose of the vaccine, while 28.5 million have already been inoculated with the second.
Likewise, 1.1 million people have received a third additional dose and 187,589 a booster dose, within the framework of the vaccination strategy initiated two weeks ago to reinforce the immunity of various groups.
