Nevado del Ruiz continues to be on a yellow alert: Colombian Geological Survey

The Colombian Geological Survey issued a new alert this Friday as a result of changes in the activity of the Nevado del Ruiz volcano, which has been exhibiting unstable behavior for just over a month. According to the entity, seismicity inside the mountain has been increasing in recent days.

“During the time that has elapsed since the PMU of October 14 until today, the Nevado del Ruiz volcano continued to show unstable behavior. The seismic activity continued to be intense, mainly related to the movement of fluids inside the volcanic conduits ”, indicated the service through an official report.

Initially, they explain, this seismicity was characterized by continuous volcanic movements but that maintain a low to moderate level. Nevertheless, In the course of the last month, tremor pulses, long-term and very long-term earthquakes with variable energy levels have been detected, mainly in the Arenas crater.

“Additionally, there was a slight increase in the seismicity generated by rock fracturing, generally of low to moderate energy, located in the Arenas crater at depths less than 2 km, and in sources proximal and distal to the crater, at depths between 2 and 5 km, and between 4 and 7 km, respectively ”.

The above, and a series of tremors known as drumbeat, of low energy level, are related to the fact that the bottom of the aforementioned crater is currently crossing a process of ascent, location, growth and evolution of a lava dome.

On this, they explained from the Service that, “the deformation of the volcanic surface, measured from GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) stations and electronic inclinometers continues to show minor changess “. Everything, in turn, leads the volcano to continue emitting water vapor and gases, mainly Sulfur Dioxide (SO2).

Added to this are the ash emissions that have been registered in recent days in municipalities such as Lebanon, Herveo, Casabianca and Villahermosa in Tolima; Armenia and Finland in Quindío; Pereira and Santa Rosa de Cabal in Risaralda; and, Manizales, Villamaría and Chinchiná in Caldas.

However, from the service, in the company of the Ministry of Mines and Energy, they warned that, “the Nevado del Ruiz volcano continues at the level of Yellow activity, at this level there may be phenomena such as swarms of earthquakes (some of them felt), ash emissions, lahars, morphological changes, noise and odors of volcanic gases, among others, that can alter the quality of life of the populations in the volcanic area of influence ”.

With this, the entities indicated that it is of vital importance that the population of the departments that are in the area of influence of the mountain do not get used to her behavior and, on the contrary, keep an eye on the official information published by risk surveillance and control agencies.

“The authorities in the departments of Caldas, Tolima, Risaralda, Cundinamarca and Quindío are reiterated to extreme actions focused on awareness and risk reduction processes, as well as disaster management as preparatory measures for future activity of the Nevado del Ruiz volcano ”, they indicated from the Geological Survey, adding that surveillance work around this phenomenon will continue.
