Status: 11/19/2021 10:40 p.m.

FC Augsburg made the Bundesliga a bit more exciting again and caused a big surprise against league leaders Bayern Munich.

Relegation candidate FC Augsburg won 2: 1 (2: 1) against FC Bayern Munich on Friday evening (November 19, 2021) at the start of the 12th matchday of the Bundesliga. It was only the third league win for Augsburg against Munich in 21 games and the first in six and a half years.

Chance for Borussia Dortmund

In front of 26,000 spectators, including 3,000 from Munich, Mads Pedersen (23rd minute) brought the FCA into the lead with his first Bundesliga goal, while André Hahn (36th) increased. Robert Lewandowski (38th) only managed the connection goal. Followers Borussia Dortmund can now move up to one point on the leaders with a win against VfB Stuttgart on Saturday. Augsburg has left the relegation ranks.

Corona-related failures

Augsburg had to do without its Swiss national player Ruben Vargas, who had tested positive for the corona virus, at short notice. Joshua Kimmich was absent from FC Bayern, who as an unvaccinated contact person for a corona infected person had to be quarantined again. Josip Stanisic (positive test) and Niklas Süle (sick in quarantine) were also absent due to the corona.

The FCA acted compactly and aggressively against the ball, made the spaces narrow with two back-four and aggressively relied on fast switching play. FC Bayern tried to control the game through possession and routine. The Augsburg effort already paid off in the first quarter of an hour: This time it was zero after the FCA had already conceded eight goals in the first 15 minutes.

Gikiewicz blunder without consequences

Augsburg was lucky when goalkeeper Rafal Gikiewicz (18th) slipped through a back pass – but the ball went out. The next corner landed at Lewandowski, who shot over the gate from a good eight meters. The Augsburgers had a particular eye on the Poles, after all, he had already scored 21 times against FCA.

Ecstasy at the FCA

Then Augsburg struck: After Iago’s cross, the ball landed at Pedersen, who carried the ball from the edge of the penalty area into the right corner. Ecstasy spread among the Augsburg supporters when Hahn, again after Iago’s cross, raised to 2-0 with a header.

The joy lasted only for a short time, however, the FCB hit back ice cold, almost naturally in the person of Lewandowski. After a flank extension by Thomas Müller, the center forward netted from the penalty spot.

Supercooled appearance of FC Bayern

After the strong first half, the Augsburg fans naturally asked themselves whether their team would be able to withstand the expected onslaught of Munich in the second half. Augsburg-Schreck Lewandowski (49,) had the best chance to equalize: Robert Gumny let the ball bounce off his chest in front of the striker’s feet, who, however, shot over the goal without being pushed.

The bottom line was that Bayern’s appearance continued to look cool, like the outside temperature on that November evening. Despite a lot of possession, clear scoring chances remained in short supply. The Augsburg defense continued to work in a focused manner, and Markus Weinzierl’s team also looked for its possibilities with a lot of commitment.

It was not until the 74th minute before Alphonso Davies shot from the edge of the penalty area again for danger in front of the Augsburg goal – the ball went centimeters past the right post. Lewandowski (80.) failed from close range and an acute angle to Gikiewicz, Davies put the margin over the goal.

Door storage in the final phase

In the final phase, the Munich team literally besieged the FCA gate. The Augsburgers fought passionately, threw themselves into every ball and, with a bit of luck, ultimately brought victory over time.

FC Augsburg will now play for Hertha BSC on Saturday (November 27th, 2021). On the same day, FC Bayern welcomed Arminia Bielefeld.
