RKI reports 45,081 new infections – the incidence continues to rise to 277.4
The Robert Koch Institute reports 45,081 new positive tests. That is over 11,000 cases more than on Saturday a week ago, when 34,002 new infections were reported. The seven-day incidence continues to rise to 277.4 from 263.7 the previous day. The value indicates how many people per 100,000 inhabitants have been infected with the corona virus in the past seven days. 228 other people died related to the virus. This increases the number of reported deaths to 97,617 within 24 hours. In total, more than 4.98 million corona tests have so far been positive in Germany.
WHO warns of hesitant tightening of the corona
The World Health Organization warns countries with rapidly increasing numbers of corona infections not to intervene too late with stricter protective measures. “The earlier measures are implemented, the less likely they will have to be imposed,” said WHO Covid-19 specialist Maria van Kerkhove. She recalled that the currently circulating Delta variant of the virus is significantly more contagious than previous variants. Some countries are in a very difficult situation and must now – at least temporarily – impose very strict measures to reduce the number of infections, said WHO emergency aid coordinator Mike Ryan.
Country report: Dramatic situation in the hospitals in the south and east
The situation in the clinics in the south and east of Germany is worsening dramatically due to the sharp rise in the number of infections. As can be seen from a confidential report from the federal states, transfers between hospitals are already being carried out on a daily basis in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg. The country report is available in the newspapers of the Funke media group. In neighboring Hesse, too, it is becoming more and more difficult to place patients in intensive care units. The situation in the east is also viewed as alarming, especially in Thuringia and Saxony: “The situation of the hospitals in these two countries is classified as dramatic, especially in Thuringia,” the report says. In order to relieve the clinics in high-incidence areas of corona, the federal states are now also considering transferring patients across Germany for the first time.
