Elections 2021: the Government arrives worn out by the innumerable setbacks it suffered during the campaign

The National government up to the election of this worn Sunday, exhausted from so much destructive internal and from the efforts to get up from the floor after the defeat in the STEP, and the wounds of the crisis unleashed by the vice president Cristina Kirchner inside the Casa Rosada. Also tormented by a sequence of political stumbles who turned the public agenda at least once a week.

In these conditions the president also arrives Alberto Fernandez, who at the end of the campaign gave clear signals of wanting to maintain the unity of the political space with the Vice President, but that received a cold bodily response from her running mate, who perfectly understands the importance of gestures in the field of politics.

From Monday September 13 to this part, the Government was submerged in an endless series of controversies and contradictions that were eating away the credibility and authority of the Head of State and the Peronist administration. For many months now, the ruling party has not been able to get out of this corrosive and toxic dynamic.

The first post-STEP fall was the internal crisis. Three days after the Primary, and seeing that Alberto Fernández was not willing to renew the Cabinet to give a sign of change after the defeat, the ministers who respond to the Vice President presented their resignations in stages. It was a violent blow of effect.

The first to open the play was the Minister of the Interior, Eduardo “Wado” De Pedro. He made his resignation available without notifying the President beforehand, who found out, through his former spokesman, above the helicopter that was taking him from José C. Paz to the Casa Rosada. The camper minister, who has the intimate confidence of Cristina Kirchner, detonated the bomb in the heart of Balcarce 50.

For Fernández and his small circle the political move of “Wado” was a betrayal. If she is in office today, it is because for the Vice President she is an immovable part of the government board. Running him out of his office could unleash a new internal war. Although the relationship between the President and the Minister is better than in the first days after the crisis, it was never the same again. Trust was broken.

The Interior Ministry assumes that the Head of State, sooner or later, will understand that De Pedro was the spearhead of a move that ended up benefiting the Government, since he was able to regain the initiative after the knockout blow at the polls. A movement that was requested by the political leader of Kirchnerism. There was no room to say no.

At first Fernández was strong and seemed to have intentions to stop the Kirchner advance. But his trench position lasted a few hours. Despite the fact that there were ministers, legislators and governors who let him know that they were there to accompany a break with Kirchnerism or a strong move to checkmate, the President desisted. He lowered his arms and renewed a part of the Cabinet.

Nik and Aníbal Fernández

In this change, a history of K steps appeared in action: Anibal Fernandez. He took over the Ministry of Security, which he had to abandon Sabina Frederic, questioned by the entire coalition and sustained only from the presidential office. Aníbal imposed his mark in a short time and, true to his style, marked the discursive field.

Since he began his administration, he was the protagonist of three events that remained at the center of the scene. He published a controversial tweet to respond to a criticism of the cartoonist Nik to the Government that centralized the political agenda for 48 hours.

“Give away refrigerators, jugs, graduate trips, plans, little money, whatever, whatever comes. How sad to never hear the word WORK, EFFORT, FUTURE, FUTURE. The DIGNITY of the people will defeat them again “, was the tweet from the @Nikgaturro account that generated the crossing.

Fernández replied: “Many schools and colleges in CABA receive subsidies from the State and that is fine. For example the ORT school / college. Do you know her? If you know her … Or do you want me to draw you a little picture? Excellent school I guarantee. I repeat … Do you know him?

The ORT school is where the children of the cartoonist go. The response of the Minister of Security was immediately questioned by Together for Change, who asked for his resignation. Fernández apologized but a stain was self-generated at the beginning of the administration.

The second fact that had him as a protagonist was a counterpoint with the Minister of Security of the province of Buenos Aires, Sergio Berni, to whom he had paid praise at the beginning of his stage in the government of the Frente de Todos, differentiating himself from his predecessor, who maintained a cold war, and sometimes not so cold, with the Buenos Aires official.

Berni differed from the government in the official position on the Mapuche conflict in the south and criticized the President. Anibal Fernandez He was concise and forceful when asked about those criticisms: “Neither the President nor I need to be approved by Sergio Berni.”

His response led to a strong onslaught from Berni through social networks. “As usual, you are always right, dear colleague Aníbal Fernández. Neither you nor the President need my approval. It is not my intention to contradict such a brilliant act of pride “, he indicated.

Then, he gave a stronger blow in which he recovered the argument between Fernández and Nik. “I regret to inform you of the obvious, it would be necessary to have the approval and consensus of the society as a whole. If my math doesn’t fail me on September 12 there were 16,323,291 Argentines who did not approve our management. Was I clear? Or do I draw a little picture for it?”, He sentenced. A new internal battle was launched.

Cristina Kirchner

The last public appreciation that gave it an unwanted prominence was the one it provided after the crime at the kiosk in Ramos Mejía. Asked about a statement by Berni, who assured that “insecurity is an endemic disease,” the national official stated: “It happens in all parts of the world, in some more and in some less.”

That was the first response of the national government to a murder in the Buenos Aires suburbs that generated a massive mobilization. That is why the phrase turned out to be an icy shield with which the ruling party protected itself so as not to get too involved in the subject.

One of the missteps that most damaged Alberto Fernández’s authority occurred on October 17, the day of Peronist loyalty. After several comings and goings, the President called a mobilization for that Sunday. It should be a day of celebration for the ruling party. But the government did not order the act or decide to have speakers. He left the march to chance.

That day the voices of the event were put up by the harshest Kirchnerism. The head of mothers of Plaza de Mayo, Hebe de Bonafini, and the former vice president Beloved Boudou, They asked the Head of State not to pay the debt to the IMF. The social leader went one step further and assured: “You always hang out with the rich and want to make us pay for a robbery.”

The government did not control the event and ended up suffering harsh criticism from a sector of the coalition. At the same time that these questions left the Plaza de Mayo and were amplified by all the media, the Minister of Economy, Martin Guzman, he was in USA trying to advance the agreement that the Government wants to reach with the IMF. It did not seem to be the best support for that management.

The campaign put the main candidates in the front row of the media. The former Buenos Aires Minister of Health was there Daniel Gollan, who assured that “With a little more silver in his pocket, the photo of Olivos would not have bothered so much”. It was ten days after the defeat in the PASO, when the Government was making force to try to get out of the black hole into which it had fallen.

It was not the only dissonant phrase of the second candidate for national deputy on the Buenos Aires list of the Frente de Todos. On the first day of November, during a television interview, he again marked a position on the government’s decision to carry out measures that increase the purchasing power of the people before the general election. “If it was Together for Change that gives people money to win an election, we would have agreed”, he sentenced.

The list of mishaps are renewed every week. The same thing had happened before STEP. If he is not the President, he is a minister or a leader with specific weight within the coalition. Even so, from time to time, the Government insists on the concept of unity as a response to all internal patches. The problem is that there are no longer photos that hide the cracks and internal lack of coordination.

A national official who has a critical view of the coalition, defined the government’s novel of contradictions in a simple phrase: “We shoot ourselves in the feet every week”.

A new government can start on Monday. Or, minimally, a new stage of the Government. It will depend on the decision of Alberto Fernández and the political will that Cristina Kirchner has to support the President without attacking him when the light goes out. First you have to wait for the decision of the people. Ultimately, it is the verdict that matters most and the one that forces governments to set a course in management.
