Austria, the Czech Republic and Hungary are becoming high-risk areas

Status: 11/12/2021 2:30 p.m.

For the first time in many weeks, two neighboring countries have been declared high-risk countries: Due to the dramatic Corona numbers, almost all of Austria and the Czech Republic will be on the list from Sunday. The USA will be deleted there, however.

The federal government will classify the Czech Republic and Hungary as corona high-risk areas from Sunday. This was announced by the Robert Koch Institute. Federal Minister of Health Jens Spahn had previously announced such a step for almost all of Austria.

With Austria and the Czech Republic, two neighboring countries have been put on the risk list for the first time in many weeks. Both countries were removed from the list in June. In the past few weeks, the number of infections there had risen dramatically again. And both countries have low vaccination rates in a European comparison, in Austria it is around 65 percent of the total population.

On the other hand, the USA will no longer be considered a high-risk area from Sunday. The decision eliminates the quarantine regulations for returning travelers. The United States had been a high risk area again since August 15.

Several criteria lead to the classification

Anyone who enters from a high-risk area and is not fully vaccinated or recovered has to be in quarantine for ten days and can only get rid of it with a negative test five days after arrival at the earliest. Countries and regions with a particularly high risk of infection are classified as high-risk areas. But not only the infection numbers are decisive for this. Other criteria are the speed at which the virus is spreading, the burden on the health system or a lack of data on the corona situation.

The classification as a high-risk area is automatically accompanied by a travel warning from the Federal Foreign Office. It makes it easier for tourists to cancel trips that have already been booked free of charge, but does not mean a travel ban.

Austria plans lockdown for non-immunized

In Austria, the seven-day incidence was most recently over 700 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, in the Upper Austria region bordering Bavaria the value reached almost 1200. In view of the numbers, the government in Vienna decided to make vaccinations mandatory for health professions. In addition, she is planning a nationwide lockdown for non-immunized, which is to be decided on Sunday.

In addition, regional lockdowns for unvaccinated people are to come into force on Monday. Unvaccinated people are only allowed to leave their home to meet their daily needs, to go to work or if they need help, said Upper Austria’s regional chief Thomas Stelzer.

Some small municipalities in Austria are exempt from being classified as high-risk areas. These include the Kleinwalsertal holiday area in Vorarlberg (Mittelberg municipality), which can only be reached by road from the German side via the Oberstdorf region. The Jungholz enclave in the Allgäu, which belongs to Tyrol, is also excluded. Also the Riss valley in the municipality of Vomp and Eben am Achensee. In the Czech Republic, the classification applies to the whole country.
