Google bets on AI with its own chip in its Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro

Google’s Pixel smartphones have been praised for years for their innovative camera software, although they never became a best-seller, something that could change with the new Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro.

Google is now off to a new beginning, with the spotlight on its new smartphones, this time in striking pastel colors.

On the other hand, a huge black camera mount – a band that runs wide at the top rear of the case – magically catches the eye.

The bold design, with the camera bar sticking out nearly three millimeters, has technical reasons. Google installed a comparatively large image sensor in the two new Pixel models. According to the company, it should absorb 150 percent more light than previous models.

The camera data is impressive, such as the 50-megapixel wide-angle lens (ƒ / 1.85 aperture value) and the 12-megapixel ultra-wide-angle lens (ƒ / 2.2 aperture value). The Pixel 6 Pro brings a 48 MP telephoto lens with 4x optical zoom (ƒ / 3.5 aperture value).

In addition to hardware with laser autofocus and extensive optical stabilization, the focus of Pixel smartphones is on innovative camera software.

After taking the photo, it is time for extensive image optimization on the Pixel. The results obtained in the practical test were high contrast photos with natural colors.

As a pioneer in night photography on smartphones, the sixth generation Pixel also performs very well in low light.

And then there are the special features of the Pixel 6. Among them, the ability to capture exciting light effects with long exposures.

In a special mode, you can create a panning effect that can only be done by professionals otherwise. On the other hand, the action mode focuses on the moving subject and blurs the background.

The Pixel can also artificially focus when, for example, a person is jumping or spinning. Where smartphone cameras otherwise only produce blurry and out-of-focus images, the Pixel 6’s focus provides a sense of success.

These new camera functions are examples of the applications of artificial intelligence (AI), which in the new Pixels are in the foreground.

To do this, Google said goodbye to Qualcomm as its chip supplier and incorporated a new one of its own design, called Tensor Processing Unit (TPU).

With so much AI power under the hood, Pixel models can carry out actions that on other platforms require complex additional programs.

Among them, the “magic eraser” stands out, with which just by touching it with the finger it is possible to erase objects from the image. Goodbye like this to the annoying tourists who appear in the background of the perfect vacation memory.

The “magic eraser” suggests the areas of the image to be “cleaned” after a quick analysis. But it can also be suggested to delete zones manually. This works not only with current photos, but also with old ones in the photo archive.

Artificial intelligence capabilities are also demonstrated in the new Pixel in written and spoken language. “Google Lens” recognizes text in the image and offers a translation. This works offline in 55 languages, while online it works in 104 languages.

The Pixel 6 can translate live in chat programs, which is good enough to carry a conversation in a completely foreign language.

A handy feature that has been available since the Pixel 4 is now available in other languages as well – the recorder app can now not only record audio as an audio file, the device also converts it to written text in real time without a Internet connection.

Back to the hardware, the Pixel 6 has a 16.3-centimeter (6.4-inch) display, while the Pixel 6 Pro has a 17-centimeter (6.7-inch) display.

Both models have OLED screens and their variable refresh rate adapts to use. Scrolling through the social media feed requires a lower cycle than a demanding game.

They also carry larger batteries with a capacity of 4600 mAh (Pixel 6) and 5000 mAh (Pixel 6 Pro).

Android 12, the latest operating system available, is available on both models from the factory. Google guarantees software updates for the next five years, including three major new versions of Android.

The new Android also brings the new “Material You” interface to smartphones. The color scheme of the fonts and buttons is dynamically adapted to the current background image.

But Android 12 not only looks nice and uncluttered, it is also supposed to offer better privacy protection. The privacy panel developed by Google plays a fundamental role in this regard, in which users can see and select what permissions the applications have.

With the departure of Qualcomm and the integration of its own Tensor chip, Google has made a huge leap with the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro.

Some spectacular AI features, a very good camera, and improved battery life ensure that Google can get back to playing in the Smartphone Champions League with the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro.

The five-year security upgrade guarantee is also exemplary. It should become an industry standard.

Those who do not tend to rely on a telephoto lens should opt for the Pixel 6. At just under 650 euros ($ 750), in the European market, for 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of flash memory, it is significantly cheaper than the model. Pro. The Pixel 6 Pro with 12 GB of RAM and 128 GB of flash memory costs just under 900 euros.
