After major failures: faults with emergency numbers resolved

Status: 11.11.2021 10:26 a.m.

The partial failure of the emergency numbers has been remedied, as Deutsche Telekom announced. The cause of the failure is still unclear. The Federal Office for Civil Protection sees the company as responsible.

After the nationwide failure of the emergency numbers 110 and 112 by the police and fire brigade, the disruptions have been resolved in all affected areas, according to Telekom. The analysis of the cause is ongoing, said a Telekom spokesman, without giving details.

According to the Federal Office for Civil Protection and Disaster Relief (BBK), Telekom is responsible for the emergency numbers. According to the BBK, the disturbance existed from 4.30 a.m. to 5.40 a.m.

BBK President Armin Schuster told the editorial network in Germany that the Telekom situation center had “very quickly” contacted the Federal Office. “The regional control centers were then able to use our NINA warning app to further disseminate the information.”

BBK sees responsibility at Telekom

The BBK is not responsible for the emergency numbers itself, but the Telekom. “We have to make sure that the warning infrastructure works,” he said. The office did that with the warning app NINA. Only Telekom could answer questions about the causes of the failure.

During the current disruption, the Federal Office distributed danger announcements for the federal states concerned. This affected, among other things, Brandenburg, Baden-Württemberg, Schleswig-Holstein, Lower Saxony, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Saxony-Anhalt, Rhineland-Palatinate and the Saarland as well as from the major cities of Berlin, Hamburg, Cologne and Frankfurt am Main.

There was already a widespread failure of the emergency numbers in Germany at the end of September. At that time, the police and fire brigade could not be reached for up to 40 minutes. The reason for the failure was also a nationwide disruption in the telecommunications network.
