President Reinhardt said that the end of the reimbursement did not lead to motivation for vaccinations. In view of the high rate of new infections, the traffic light groups are considering additional measures. All developments in the live blog.
In view of the high rate of new infections in Germany, the traffic light groups are currently discussing the introduction of additional measures for the successor law for the epidemic emergency. According to a preliminary report by “Bild am Sonntag” based on information from negotiating circles, the SPD, Greens and FDP are planning a daily test obligation for employees and visitors in nursing homes, regardless of whether they have been vaccinated or recovered.
The corona premium for clinics should be reactivated. Hospitals would receive state compensation if they kept part of their intensive care beds free for possible corona patients. In order to speed up the booster vaccinations for seniors, doctors should be obliged to write to their elderly patients and inform them about the third vaccination. However, the traffic light groups wanted to forego a lockdown for unvaccinated people or a nationwide 2G rule for public life. Above all, the FDP is strictly against it.
The Bonn virologist Hendrik Streeck doubts that booster vaccinations can break the fourth wave of corona in Germany. “The hope of the booster as a solution to the fourth wave could prove to be deceptive,” said Streeck to the editorial network in Germany.
The booster vaccination can reduce the number of vaccination breakthroughs, as studies from Israel have shown. “But my concern is that the booster was not responsible for breaking the third wave in Israel,” said the virologist.
Streeck referred to the surprisingly strong increase in the number of cases in December and January of the previous year after the wave was broken in November. “I fear that this is happening again now and that it was not the booster but a previously unknown factor that broke the wave in Israel,” he said. However, Streeck still considers the booster vaccination necessary to protect the elderly.
The German Medical Association is calling for a quick return to free corona rapid tests. The end of the assumption of costs for so-called citizen tests did not motivate those unwilling to be vaccinated, President Klaus Reinhardt told the newspapers of the Funke media group. The federal and state governments should therefore have the courage to correct this wrong decision quickly and consistently.
Since October 11, corona rapid tests have only been free in Germany in exceptional cases. The federal government has stopped funding, and many test stations are now closed. The reason for the decision was that everyone now has the opportunity to protect themselves through a vaccination. Since then, free rapid tests have only been available for people who cannot be vaccinated, including children under the age of 12, as well as temporarily for 12 to 17 year olds and pregnant women.
The administration of US President Joe Biden has suffered a legal setback in its efforts to achieve extensive vaccination requirements in the fight against the corona pandemic. A federal appeals court in New Orleans suspended the implementation of a Washington government order.
Employees of companies with more than 100 employees and certain employees in the healthcare sector would be affected. The government wants employers to require these more than 100 million workers to be vaccinated against the coronavirus or weekly negative tests from January 4.
The court argued that there was reason to believe that the measures had “serious legal and constitutional problems”. The judges announced an accelerated review of the order before a final decision, against which companies and Republican-ruled states, among others, had sued.
