Three dead and one missing in an accident on an offshore oil rig in Libya

Three Tunisians lost their lives and a fourth is still missing following an accident on Friday on an offshore oil rig off the western coast of Libya, according to official sources.

“According to an official balance, there are three dead and a fourth is missing,” the company Mellitah Oil and Gas, which manages the platform, said on Saturday.

In a statement released in the evening, the Tunisian consulate general in Tripoli lamented “a painful accident” on the Al Buri oil platform, off the Libyan city of Zauia.

A fifth Tunisian “was able to be rescued from the sea and transported by Air Ambulance to hospital” while the searches continue, according to a statement posted on Facebook from Friday night to Saturday.

According to the Tunisian consulate, the five workers, employed by a Tunisian operator, fell from one of the floating tanks when a cable broke.

The ports authority of the Ministry of Transport in Libya, said in a statement that “it was alerted by the management of the Zauia oil terminal (45 km west of Tripoli) about the accident, which occurred at 2.30 p.m. (12.30 p.m. GMT), when the cables containing a floating reservoir broke. “
