Construction work on the extension of the Rothensee waste-to-energy plant (MHKW) began with a symbolic groundbreaking ceremony. The investments for the third block amount to 200 million euros. There is a thermal waste treatment plant for commercial and industrial waste (grate furnace) and a plant for the incineration of municipal sewage sludge.
The MHKW at the Magdeburg-Rothensee site is a joint project between EEW Energy from Waste and the Magdeburg Municipal Works (SWM). It is a waste-to-energy plant with four incineration lines with a capacity of 650,000 tons per year so far. According to EEW, this makes it one of the largest German waste incineration plants.
